Client Updates

We love to receive letters, pictures and emails from our clients updating us on the horses they have purchased or bred through our farm. With so many of our "children" out in the world, keeping track of them is a daunting task. It is very gratifying to see so many of them doing so well and living up to their owner's dreams. It certainly makes all the effort, planning, dreaming and occasional heartache worthwhile!

Here are some of our favorite updates...

Owned by:   Sheila Hultgren of Erie, PA

Hi Mo,
It's been such a long since I've been in touch, I thought it was about time you received an update on Lhunar. He is such a wonderful guy and has been so good! This was his first official year of showing and we qualified for the Region 2 championships at Training Level, which I thought was wonderful for a 4-year-old! We are still training with Nancy Lewis-Stanton at SendonWay and having lots of fun and learning so much. Lhunar has such a good work ethic and he seems to really enjoy going to the shows. I think he's learned that when he gets into the show ring, he has to get down to business. He settles right in and does his job. Of course, we do have those times when he thinks he knows the test better than I do - but that's part of the fun! The judges have very nice things to say about him - especially his wonderful gaits! There are a couple of photos attached. One is from our ride at Regionals - it was early in the morning and the sun was just breaking through the fog. Kate Sunder (a student of Nancy's from Lake Erie College) took it and I just thought it was so cool! Kate also took the other one, a pasture shot that shows how much Lhunar has matured.

Take care,

Sheila Hultgren

Gabri L  2004 Hanoverian Filly
 sire  Gold Luck      dam  Adelaida
Owned by:   Jane Pipkin

Hello friends,

Gabri L has spent her 1/2 - 2 1/2 years of age (it occurs to me that she is just 2 1/2 years old this week) at two different farms mostly out 24/7 but also coming into her own stall regularly at various intervals to be handled or because of weather, etc. The highlight of her fifteen months at her recent farm was Australian Shephards who were trained to herd with a variety of sheep and ducks (and a guard lama). The sheep and lama were frequently out in the same pasture as the young horses. One day Gabri L and her buddy had great fun chasing the lama! The pasture also circled two sides of the outdoor riding ring, and Gabri L and her buddy would hang out and watch horses being ridden. She has always been wonderful with other animals, including the dogs. That was some excellent environmental training for her.

Sensing that her mind was ready for more stimulation, I moved her to a big horse farm October 6. There are 30 horses and ponies at her new farm. It is a relaxed and fun place with very professional care and conscientious riding and training. There are run-in sheds in some of the paddocks and she has her very own stall. She and her thoroughbred gelding neighbor are quite smitten with each other. It is nice for me because my other horse is there also. Pik Rally went over in the 2-horse trailer to pick her up. After not having been in a trailer for 15 months (and maybe never in a 2-horse?) she once again loaded like a pro. Good girl!

She is a pleasure to behold - her coat, markings, her personality/temperament (curious, sensible, sensitive, confident, fun/joyous). I feel very fortunate to have discovered this horse from the ad Pat placed in Hunter and Sport Horse Magazine before she was weaned. (I don't even subscribe to that one; my housemate had borrowed it!) This horse has always been wonderful to handle: confident but sensitive to people. Very rarely has a reprimand or strong aidbeen necessary, and I've been very careful to follow everything with light aids and "good girls" and pats. Even though she is at a big horse farm, I make sure she is still out a lot and gets plenty of exercise. She loves the other horses and has always gotten along well with them being neither overly alpha and definitely not overly submissive.

I was so right about her mind being ready for more stimulation, and it is wonderful seeing her interact with the other horses and learn to interact with people better and better. She is learning so much just from how the other horses behave, watching them get groomed, being handled several times a day, and in general being in a more stimulating environment. My goals for this year have been to introduce her to the saddle and bridle, stand in crossties for bathing/grooming and just standing longer without attendance, reinforce show-quality in-hand work learned earlier, introduce her to a blanket and clippers and whatever else seems worthwhile. (It was a little hard for me to work with her at the farm she just left so I'm behind on the saddle and bridle part, but she sacked out really well even a year ago.) I put a fly-sheet on her for the first time last week, and that was no big deal at all. Good girl. I want to get her a turn-out sheet for winter this year.

I work with her about two times a week for maybe 5 to 20 minutes depending but I get to say hello and check in on her a lot more. The coolest thing is the first time I chased her around the indoor I got her to join up with me (magical, right). We've done that a couple more times, and it's fun for both of us, but it's not something I want to do too often at this point. She 16 hands and still growing, so I'm going to take it easy on her joints for a long time. It wouldn't surprise me if she finishes at 16'3 hh or more; she just continues to grow very steadily. She doesn't move like a "big" horse, much too quick and coordinated and knowing where her body is.

We know she is a DRESSAGE prospect. Today I put a low jump pole, and WOW! She took it from a standstill. I didn't see how tight the knees and lower legs tucked up because I was watching that head extend, those shoulders come up, and that hind end push. (I think the knees were pretty even though.) When she was following me around after, I walked some tighter turns, and she very handily walked that inside hind leg across and under. The basic trot is still a medium to extended trot, such relaxation and about a 6 inch overstep at least. The canter is wonderfully balanced and uphill. I think she steps under nicely with her hind legs in the canter. I don't get to see her canter much still, because she covers so much ground in the trot. I joke that she will do her cantering across an open field! She still has those floating gaits, and she has been catching everybody's eye. She has great feet, so my farrier says.

I feel very privileged to be the caretaker of this lovely being who appears to be quite happy that I am her special person. It is so exciting watching her grow in all dimensions. Those of you who know me know that I do not have an "ego" perspective with my horses, simply a joy in our partnership and a commitment to take care of their bodies, minds, and feelings and enjoy their company and engaging in mutually-beneficial sporting and relaxing activities. I hope you enjoy the pictures. (Sorry the files are so big; I got a new computer and do not yet have a program to reduce picture size.)

Hi Mo! sure was great to see you today and "catchup"...I have been meaning to call you for the longest time, but have been doing so much traveling with the judging...well, you know...anyway after her debacle in that first test (which turned out to still be a respectable 62.7%!) Galena redeemed herself in First 3 with Anita Owen...and got a 71.7%...Anita LOVED her! Also, I found a head shot of Graptolite (by Gold Luck out of my Thoroughbred mare)...he was probalby only 4 at the time, but he basically looks the same...that baby face will probably look the same at 20! God willing! Anyway, his stats are: TR1 62.27% and TR2 69.23% and that was at Applewood Farm...then yesterday he went to Hawk Hollow and did a TR2 with 72.69% and TR4 71.15%...those were his first shows ever. I am in heaven that he has made it into the show ring! I will drop the picture in the mail to you tomorrow...I am sure Sue won't mind if you use, as long as you give her credit. Talk to you soon...I will check your website to see the current changes...talk to you soon. Cindy

EM Ghlycerine  2002 Hanoverian Mare
sire  Gold Luck      dam  EM Whispre
Owned by:   Kris Schuler, Fleetwood, PA

Mo,

Just a quick update now. Ghlycerine just got back from the 2 day Morven Park Hot to Trot Show I and II. She was 3rd in the Materiale with a 78% and 79% (behind Willow Rose[in top 3 for Materiale in the US in 2005] and BW Callista[Hilltop Farm horse with lots of under saddle experience]) both days. The first day's class had 4 horses. The second day there were 7 horses (a Weltmeyer, Contucci, Sandro Hit, Gold Luck, Feurst Gotthard, Rienzi, ??don't remember). The 1st day class, we had to to lengthenings and sitting trot. The next day, (diff judge) everyone rode around in medium/lengthened gaits the whole time (Tami Glover from Hilltop warned me in advance as she rode in an earlier class both days). Glissy was great in the big group of horses. That says a lot for a mare who was at her first undersaddle show and never gets ridden with other horses in the arena in general. The majority of the riders were professionals, and this was my first Materiale class ever, so I was quite pleased.

In hand, she won her 4 yo class (scores of 79% and 79.5%) and was Mare Champion and Res Mare Champion. She was SOOOO tired though and really didn't show well by the Mature horse championship. She actually showed an excellent walk, but her trot didn't have the UMPF needed for the championship ring by that round.

Off to Fair Hill with her next weekend. I think it will help her that the in hand classes are on Sat and the under saddle Materiale is on Sunday. At Morven, the undersaddle classes were first thing, and by the in hand time she was pretty zapped. Also, I haven't mentioned to you, but Ghale was 2nd in her 3 yo filly class at Dressage at Lexington with a 74.3%. She was very good in the Championship ring too, but maybe next time we will qualify.

Hope you are well,
Kris

Hi Mo, just wanted to tell you that I took Whirlpool to his first show and althought it was a schooling show he was as great as great could be and got a 81% I am amazed by this horses temperament. I have never dealt with such a young horse before. I think he is going to spoil me. I am going to show him a few more times and take him to devon and turn him back out for the winter. Sara

Mo, I just wanted to let you know that my Sir Donnerhall filly out of my Loerke mare was presented to the GOV this past Monday. She was not only a premium filly but some of the judges comments included, " if this filly was in Germany she would be an Elite Foal Auction candidate", " she is among the top foals we have seen in Germany". You can just imagine that I am so proud of her, they also loved the mom. I am now standing a German Riding Pony Stallion and having a ball with him. He'll be at the Dressage at Lexington show, perhaps I'll see you there. Thanks again for your advice. Sincerely, Lou Rascoe Longview Farm __________________________________________________

My horse of a lifetime for sure. I've never ridden a horse before who learns this quickly and loves his job!

Ghuitar is returning to work after a pasture injury forced some R&R time off for 6 months in 2005 and we are hoping to show at Third Level sometime this year. After 6 weeks back under saddle he's regaining his condition and his lateral work is fabulous!

It's so good to have the big guy back!

I saw the picture of Grande and I on your web site. Thought you might like an update on our shows. We also finished third overall for Training Level at ESDCTA's Year-End Awards. Two weekends ago, we were representing ESDCTA on the First Level team at the Region 1 Adult Team Competition in Maryland. Our team won first place (as did all of the ESDCTA teams) and Grande and I were First Level Champions with a high score of 68.889%.This year, in addition to showing First Level, we have been competing in First Level Musical Freestyle with all of our scores being 66+ to 67+%. We have qualified at First Level and at First Level Freestyle for both BLM and ESDCTA Championships this year and are qualified at Training Level, First Level and First Level Freestyle for the Region 1 GAIC Championships (formerly called ABICs). I'll let you know how we do.

Thanks for breeding horses like him. He's a dream come true (most days). I'll update you more at the end of October after all of the championships are done. Thanks for posting us on your site - it was neat to see us there.

Hi Mo, you asked for an update and here it is. We've been to two shows and have done well at both. This past weekend at Dressage at Fair Hill we were consistently in the ribbons at Training Test 4, with our highest score being a 68%. The classes were large and the company was very impressive. Allie (pronounced All-Lee) has become the love of my life and gives the best horsey hugs on the planet. The comments we've received from the judges include, "you two will be incredible", and lovely pairing. Thanks for pairing us up. Florence

Dear Mo, Thanks for calling me about Ghlacier. She is a very nice mare. I raised her outside with another filly and aside from a bout of rainrot last winter she has had a super life. She has a kind eye, a beautiful face and her body is well proportioned. (She probably will end up under 16 h.) But the show stopper is her movement, it is just lovely, without a doubt the best of all my horses. I do not think I will get her to inspection/performance this fall. I will keep you posted if anything changes. Best wishes, Suzie

Golden Rule  2002 Hanoverian Colt

Hi Mo,My name is Ami Holt and I'm writing for a couple of reasons. The first is that I have one of Gold Luck's 2002 colts (I leased the mare Fine Tune from Lucile at Honey Locust to get the 2002 foal) and my husband and I are so so proud of him. We're starting our own small Hanoverian breeding farm and this colt was our fist baby and wow were we lucky! I'm sending you a couple of pictures as I thought you may be interested (remember they're just backyard snapshots so not the best quality in the world). We named him Golden Rule (Lucile has been very good to us and I thought this name would represent how she has helped us - living by those Golden Rules of life...) "Goalie" as we call him at the barn is so well tempered, has great movement and confirmation and just loves attention. We're hoping he'll make a stallion one day. Last year at the inspection he was named champion colt and the judges said "he showed the stamp of his sire". Anyway, enough bragging :) I just thought you'd like to see one of your babies....

The other reason I'm writing is that I've gotten a couple things from the Mid-Atlantic Hanoverian Association and am interested in what this association is involved with as I think I'd like to become a member.

Mo,
I just wanted to drop you a line about Smitty (aka Ghreenland).

My vet told me not to start him until this fall, which I did. He is progressing well and now lunges (walk, trot, canter) with a snaffle and with the "german neck stretcher" at times. I have also stood next to him in his stall waving my arms and legs around and even placing a foot on his rump and neck. He was unimpressed. He has had a saddle on (no reaction, he was too busy eating my friend's shoe). The only thing that has gotten him the least bit excited was the first addition of boots on his forelegs and for the first time I saw his trot. Wow. He even lunged while they were working on the roof in the indoor arena without incident. But he is no deadhead, just very sensible for a baby.

He is a big food piggy though! He now has his first bridle and as soon as I get some pictures I'll email them to you. What a wonderful boy. Mark is very eager to come and look at the babies as soon as they "hatch" (his word) as he feels sorry that I lost out on dhaphne due to his slowness. So, expect us in the spring when the babies come. I am looking for a broodmare prospect that I will also ride and love. Thank you for your breeding efforts. I can't wait to have another.

Happy holidays to you and yours. Give all the horses a pat from me,

Sandhill

Hi Mo,

I wanted to let you know how another Gold Luck offspring is doing. Gibson Girl is a 1999 foal. She is by Gold Luck-Bellefleur/Bordeaux. I took her to her first recognized show in Nov. and she won high % score award at Training level on both days. One of the judges wrote "lovely mare with a good future." Gigi was so composed for a young horse. She is the first horse I have bred myself and raised and it has truely been a rewarding experience. She was easy to break and is very naturally balanced. She has a wonderful work ethic and has a sweet personality. I'll certainly keep you informed on her progress. Continued luck with your stallion.

Hi again,

Ok - so here's a brief history on Gift Tax's ('Tucker') training/show experience. We backed Tucker for the first time as a three year old. I was the first person to sit on and ride him and they are moments I will treasure forever! As a 3 yr old with between 6-9 months of training underway, Tucker went to his first few hunter jumper shows and even was champion at one in a baby open hunter class (the fences were maybe 2'). The best thing about him was his wonderful disposition. Even though green, he handled the schooling areas with ease and would stand outside the ring awaiting his turn like a made show horse...

Hi Mo,
I purchased a filly from you, Churacao, a few years ago. She has matured to a sweet, solid 16 H mare and for 1 month under saddle, she's doing great. Looking forward to presenting her at the mare inspection this July in Mequon, Wi. I bred her this year to Widmark and am looking forward to seeing what a Goldluck/Contucci/Widmark will look like (besides chestnut!)

I just read about the hard times during your past foaling season. My heart goes out to you and your staff. What a tough story to tell! From my standpoint, I know you're a great business to deal with and have a wonderful, well-informed breeding program. Hang in there-- and keep up the good work.

Best wishes!

August 2004

Hi Mo,
I hope that you and the kids are doing well, and getting a breather after breeding season.

It was really fun to see both my boys on your website. Thanks for giving Gladstone his own page. It's really neat to tell my friends that they can look him up.

Attached are some pics of Granville taken yesterday at 7 weeks. We tried hard to catch his action, so you can see what a lovely mover he is. Of course, he only wanted to run and buck or stand still. I'm still trying to get one of his lovely, springy trot. I've also attached a few photos of Gladstone taken with my 6'2" husband last week after a show. Someday, I'll try to get a decent under saddle picture of him. (It's been hard tying to coordinate a photographer at a time when both Gladstone and I are tidy and the outdoor footing and weather are decent.)

The show was held as part of a large Morgan show in Tulsa, and amateurs and professionals were put together. Even so, Gladstone acquitted himself well, earning a second place with 68.46% in Training 4 and winning First 1 with a 69.26%. We had needed one more score at Training Level to qualify for our year-end awards, so this should be our last time out at Training level. The only exception will be the Region 9 championships, where I hope we will do well, even though the competition is fierce.

FYI, I asked USEF why Gladstone wasn't listed under Gold Luck on the leading sires list. They corrected it, and Gold Luck moved from #62 to #44 after GSs scores were put in. (And Gold Luck had moved up again to #38 last week.) Let's hope the kids keep doing their daddy proud!

Keep in touch,
Lyn

Hi Mo! Gracie (barn name) was born on 4-14-06, the same day your W line mare foaled! Winsome Ways' (aka Bean) due date was 4-5-06. We can thank Gold Luck for the fancy markings; a blaze and 3 big whites! The filly's registered name will be some other spelling of Gracious, since that spelling is already taken. Gracie is doing great and growing like a weed! She has such a sweet personality and loves being scratched! I named the photos with the wrong age. She is really 9 days-old in them. We are the breeders and owners, Richard and Marianne Atkinson, Evergreen Farm, DuBois, PA. Thanks, Marianne
