Client Updates

We love to receive letters, pictures and emails from our clients updating us on the horses they have purchased or bred through our farm. With so many of our "children" out in the world, keeping track of them is a daunting task. It is very gratifying to see so many of them doing so well and living up to their owner's dreams. It certainly makes all the effort, planning, dreaming and occasional heartache worthwhile!

Here are some of our favorite updates...

Hello Mrs. Swanson I have been watching your website closely over the past months because I purchased a horse that was bred at your farm, Ghrenadine, by Gold Luck. I am having a great time with her and she is doing very well in dressage. I am hoping to compete with her in Chicago this summer in 4th Level and PSG. I was curious if you had pictures of her as a baby why she was at your farm, I would love to see them if you did. Melissa Lundy

Genuine Gem  1999 Hanoverian Mare
 sire  Gold Luck      dam  Armandy
Owned by:   Jennifer Knight

I love to look at your site occasionally and adore your beautiful stallion Gold Luck. I own a mare that he sired. Her name is Genuine Gem and she is a 1999 mare out of the Hanoverian mare Armandy (bred by Rhonda Hermanek). I purchased her almost three years ago. She is doing very well in dressage. Last year in 2006, she was Arizona state champion at 1st level. In 2007 she competed at the region V championships and took third place at 2nd level and 3rd level. She has shown at 4th level with a score of 66.7%. Also, she is currently ranked in 9th place for the American Hanoverian Society All Breed Awards for 2007 at third level in the open division. That means there are two Gold Luck offspring in the top ten this year at third level for the All Breeds Awards! I just though you might want to know! I am very proud of my mare and I'm sure you are just as proud of Gold Luck and his offspring! What a remarkable sire!

Fondly,

Jennifer Knight

Gabri L  2004 Hanoverian Filly
 sire  Gold Luck      dam  Adelaida
Owned by:   Jane Pipkin

Hello friends,

Gabri L has spent her 1/2 - 2 1/2 years of age (it occurs to me that she is just 2 1/2 years old this week) at two different farms mostly out 24/7 but also coming into her own stall regularly at various intervals to be handled or because of weather, etc. The highlight of her fifteen months at her recent farm was Australian Shephards who were trained to herd with a variety of sheep and ducks (and a guard lama). The sheep and lama were frequently out in the same pasture as the young horses. One day Gabri L and her buddy had great fun chasing the lama! The pasture also circled two sides of the outdoor riding ring, and Gabri L and her buddy would hang out and watch horses being ridden. She has always been wonderful with other animals, including the dogs. That was some excellent environmental training for her.

Sensing that her mind was ready for more stimulation, I moved her to a big horse farm October 6. There are 30 horses and ponies at her new farm. It is a relaxed and fun place with very professional care and conscientious riding and training. There are run-in sheds in some of the paddocks and she has her very own stall. She and her thoroughbred gelding neighbor are quite smitten with each other. It is nice for me because my other horse is there also. Pik Rally went over in the 2-horse trailer to pick her up. After not having been in a trailer for 15 months (and maybe never in a 2-horse?) she once again loaded like a pro. Good girl!

She is a pleasure to behold - her coat, markings, her personality/temperament (curious, sensible, sensitive, confident, fun/joyous). I feel very fortunate to have discovered this horse from the ad Pat placed in Hunter and Sport Horse Magazine before she was weaned. (I don't even subscribe to that one; my housemate had borrowed it!) This horse has always been wonderful to handle: confident but sensitive to people. Very rarely has a reprimand or strong aidbeen necessary, and I've been very careful to follow everything with light aids and "good girls" and pats. Even though she is at a big horse farm, I make sure she is still out a lot and gets plenty of exercise. She loves the other horses and has always gotten along well with them being neither overly alpha and definitely not overly submissive.

I was so right about her mind being ready for more stimulation, and it is wonderful seeing her interact with the other horses and learn to interact with people better and better. She is learning so much just from how the other horses behave, watching them get groomed, being handled several times a day, and in general being in a more stimulating environment. My goals for this year have been to introduce her to the saddle and bridle, stand in crossties for bathing/grooming and just standing longer without attendance, reinforce show-quality in-hand work learned earlier, introduce her to a blanket and clippers and whatever else seems worthwhile. (It was a little hard for me to work with her at the farm she just left so I'm behind on the saddle and bridle part, but she sacked out really well even a year ago.) I put a fly-sheet on her for the first time last week, and that was no big deal at all. Good girl. I want to get her a turn-out sheet for winter this year.

I work with her about two times a week for maybe 5 to 20 minutes depending but I get to say hello and check in on her a lot more. The coolest thing is the first time I chased her around the indoor I got her to join up with me (magical, right). We've done that a couple more times, and it's fun for both of us, but it's not something I want to do too often at this point. She 16 hands and still growing, so I'm going to take it easy on her joints for a long time. It wouldn't surprise me if she finishes at 16'3 hh or more; she just continues to grow very steadily. She doesn't move like a "big" horse, much too quick and coordinated and knowing where her body is.

We know she is a DRESSAGE prospect. Today I put a low jump pole, and WOW! She took it from a standstill. I didn't see how tight the knees and lower legs tucked up because I was watching that head extend, those shoulders come up, and that hind end push. (I think the knees were pretty even though.) When she was following me around after, I walked some tighter turns, and she very handily walked that inside hind leg across and under. The basic trot is still a medium to extended trot, such relaxation and about a 6 inch overstep at least. The canter is wonderfully balanced and uphill. I think she steps under nicely with her hind legs in the canter. I don't get to see her canter much still, because she covers so much ground in the trot. I joke that she will do her cantering across an open field! She still has those floating gaits, and she has been catching everybody's eye. She has great feet, so my farrier says.

I feel very privileged to be the caretaker of this lovely being who appears to be quite happy that I am her special person. It is so exciting watching her grow in all dimensions. Those of you who know me know that I do not have an "ego" perspective with my horses, simply a joy in our partnership and a commitment to take care of their bodies, minds, and feelings and enjoy their company and engaging in mutually-beneficial sporting and relaxing activities. I hope you enjoy the pictures. (Sorry the files are so big; I got a new computer and do not yet have a program to reduce picture size.)

Gift Tax  1999 Hanoverian Gelding
 sire  Gold Luck      dam

Hi again,

Ok - so here's a brief history on Gift Tax's ('Tucker') training/show experience. We backed Tucker for the first time as a three year old. I was the first person to sit on and ride him and they are moments I will treasure forever! As a 3 yr old with between 6-9 months of training underway, Tucker went to his first few hunter jumper shows and even was champion at one in a baby open hunter class (the fences were maybe 2'). The best thing about him was his wonderful disposition. Even though green, he handled the schooling areas with ease and would stand outside the ring awaiting his turn like a made show horse...

Hi Mo,
I purchased a filly from you, Churacao, a few years ago. She has matured to a sweet, solid 16 H mare and for 1 month under saddle, she's doing great. Looking forward to presenting her at the mare inspection this July in Mequon, Wi. I bred her this year to Widmark and am looking forward to seeing what a Goldluck/Contucci/Widmark will look like (besides chestnut!)

I just read about the hard times during your past foaling season. My heart goes out to you and your staff. What a tough story to tell! From my standpoint, I know you're a great business to deal with and have a wonderful, well-informed breeding program. Hang in there-- and keep up the good work.

Best wishes!

Hi Mo! Gracie (barn name) was born on 4-14-06, the same day your W line mare foaled! Winsome Ways' (aka Bean) due date was 4-5-06. We can thank Gold Luck for the fancy markings; a blaze and 3 big whites! The filly's registered name will be some other spelling of Gracious, since that spelling is already taken. Gracie is doing great and growing like a weed! She has such a sweet personality and loves being scratched! I named the photos with the wrong age. She is really 9 days-old in them. We are the breeders and owners, Richard and Marianne Atkinson, Evergreen Farm, DuBois, PA. Thanks, Marianne

Haven't had him long but is proving to have a lovely temperament and willingness with sense and moves very well, with great canter and walk - trot pretty good too. His name is Sicco B. Julie Keys

Mo, We just picked up Whitman this evening. He is now gelded, since he was going to be out anyway. All of the people at the clinic remarked on how well mannered he was and easy going. The damage to his nose should just be a small scar and bump. He will be on stall rest for two weeks, but otherwise will be fine and back to normal. He looks very pathetic with his face covered in a bandage. Carrie

Hi Mo and Jim, Just wanted to let you guys know that we all made it home fine. It felt like a lonnngg trip but Lhifesaver handled it great. Took him about 10 minutes to decide he wanted to come OFF the trailer when we got here, but he eventually decided to meander down the ramp and into his stall. My other horses have come into the next stall for a "meet and greet".... so far, so good. I brought him down some warmed water and he was drinking that and munching on some hay when I left him. So far he's living up to his rep for being "Mr. Cool". No theatrics or drama, just kind of looking around and taking it all in. I'll be sure to keep you posted, but wanted you to know he was safely home. Thanks for everything. Talk to you soon! Caroline

Lhindt  2008 Hanoverian Gelding
 sire  Loerke      dam  Whichita
Owned by:

Hi, Mo! I'm sure you get TOO many email messages, but I couldn't resist sending this one because I'm so pleased. I've started fooling around with Lhindt a bit more during the late summer months -- taking walk-abouts (near roads, flushing deer from the underbrush, past the exciting mare fields [he can passage], passing huge scary farm equipment, meeting other horses out on the trail, etc.) He's been amazingly calm. He looks, but he's not been stupid. The worst (not bad at all) was when we flushed the deer -- he ran backward about 4-5 steps but didn't pull the lead out of my hands, and second worst was passing the big scary farm equipment at 3' distance -- he took some convincing but he passed it calmly in the end -- something NEITHER of my mares would have done. We're also doing some ring work (just in the halter): jumping over cavaletti, learning to stay at my shoulder no matter what speed I go, backing up, and moving away from me when I ask by pushing on his sides. Just in the last 2 weeks, I've started to introduce Lhindt to "clothes:" the bridle (w/o reins and with the halter over top, so far; he LOVES having the bit in his mouth), sport boots (non-issue after the first few exaggerated steps), a surcingle with pad (he looked at it hoping it would go away, then ignored it when it didn't), and today the saddle (w/o stirrups, which was a total non-issue). No bucking, no rolling, no pawing -- what a good sport! So, pat yourself on the back for making a good recommendation for me (at least so far)! At nearly 2 1/2 he's still a geek, and still looks like a giraffe when he puts his head up to the full height of that long neck. I haven't measured him in the last month, but I think he's over 16.2 now; he's the tallest of the geldings in his field (and no push over any more). I'm having a blast. Looking forward to seeing you and Jim again soon. Best to John and Beth. -- Dennis

Hello, I ran across your web site and though you might like some photos of my 2002 Loreke gelding. He is out of an Eminenz mare once owned by Suzanne Quarles and grew to a startling 17.3 hands! We chose Loerke as a refining stallion for our somewhat old fashioned Eminenz mare. I was shocked when he was born almost yearling size and wasn't sure what to think of him as a foal. He was fifty percent bigger than the next largest foal at his inspection and I was pleasantly surprised when he won the inspection and I was told he may be a stallion candidate. When he was a 17 hand yearling stallion, we decided that wasn't such a good idea and his future changed rather quickly. Before he was cut, I showed him once in hand at a USDF breed show and he won his very large class. I have enjoyed his very sensitive, kind temperament and love his desire for human contact. I took him to his first dressage show a few weeks ago and was extremely happy with his behavior and overall show manners. His size is always an attraction wherever he goes -- in the show stalls he can reach over the divider and pull on the braids of his neighbor! I have attached four pictures of Loire. The first two are of him as a two year old and the last two are from his first dressage show a few weeks ago. Sincerely, Sue Thome

Hi Mo, I wanted to let you know how another Gold Luck offspring is doing. Gibson Girl is a 1999 foal. She is by Gold Luck-Bellefleur/Bordeaux. I took her to her first recognized show in Nov. and she won high % score award at Training level on both days. One of the judges wrote "lovely mare with a good future." Gigi was so composed for a young horse. She is the first horse I have bred myself and raised and it has truely been a rewarding experience. She was easy to break and is very naturally balanced. She has a wonderful work ethic and has a sweet personality. I'll certainly keep you informed on her progress. Continued luck with your stallion. I am forwarding a few pictures of Gigi in a seperate email that a friend took at the show. Leslie Morris 238 Papworth Ave Metairie, LA 70005 504-833-7923

Hi, Mo, At the Festival in June you asked me to let you know how Maddie was doing with her showing. I showed her at BFK's Labor Day show. She got a 62.286% and 64.517% at 1st 3 and a 56.316% & 61.053% at 1st 4 on Friday and Saturday, respectively. One of the judges wrote in her comments "wonderful horse". I was very proud of her and qualified to ride at the BLM championships on October 12 at the Horse Park of NJ. Best of all, she was very well behaved and seemed to like (or be indifferent to) the show atmosphere. I saw on the Labor Day program that you had shown on Thursday at the breed show and thought I should have let you know in advance that I would be showing Maddie. However, if you're like me, you would have wanted to get home when you were through showing anyway. So our last show this season is October 12 if you have the time and inclination to make a trip the HPNJ. Marsha Montgomery

Hi Mo, I writing writing with a Matilda update. Now that the school year has come to a close, I finally had a day with my girl. She surpassed my expectations! I took her right out the field and set up a little grooming station under a nice shady tree. She stood like we did this every day. She is extremely confident, smart and personable. You definitely took all the qualities I listed in my first long email and found me a wonderful future dressage partner. I believe that you have a matchmaking gift! I also am so appreciative that you for recommended Judy Reggio to me. She takes super care of Matilda and treats us both like family. I will be in touch with future updates. Just wanted to send a quick e-mail to let you know we made it home to Michigan safe and sound....we turned in the drive way around 11:00 p.m. Larry walked right off the trailer after just a few minutes of surveillance....he walked into his stall and settled in right away. He is so sensible! My girls love him already too. I'll keep you updated on his progress! Thanks again for being such wonderful hosts.....you have no idea what a thrill it was for Kathy and I to be at your farm....it's Disneyland for Dressage riders! Dear Rolling Stone Farm, I was on your website and thought I would send you a photo of my Gold Luck baby Gipsy Rose. She was originally bred in KY but now lives here with me in Colorado. I have never had a horse with such a wonderful temperment. Her gaits are of course lovely as is her confirmation. It looks like she is going to remain small since she is only 15.1 hands and is coming four but I am petite so we make a nice pair. She is scheduled to be started this spring so I will keep you updated on her progress under saddle. I think you can see that she could not be any flashier with her four white socks and star and stripe. Thanks for your time, Lindsay Conway

I have attached a few pictures of Grace and yes she certainly has found someone to love her. I love her bunches! We are trying to get her muscle tone back and get her in shape. We have a lot of fun together. If we make it to any shows which will be new for both of us, I'll keep you posted. I am also hoping to show her in conformation as well but more for fun than anything. I just moved her from where I bought her and she loves her new home. She has a large pasture now (with grass even) and a smaller, quieter barn and she even met a new friend (horse) that she loves to spend time with... She is beginning to trust me and I know when she does, it will be worth every minute we spend together. She's a little spoiled....and she's loving every minute of it. Sherry
